Arethusa Falls via Bemis Brook Trail

Livermore, NH 03812

Arethusa Falls

Our Rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* This is such a beautiful & fun hike! This trail also offers 2 other stunning waterfalls, Coliseum Falls & Bemis Falls. Although it was a bit difficult due to the steepness we are looking forward to doing this one again!

Bemis Falls

Coliseum Falls

About the place:

Arethusa Falls, located in Crawford Notch State Park is New Hampshire’s largest waterfall standing at approximately 140 feet tall. We highly suggest taking the Bemis Brook Trail to get to this location because it offers exceptional views of a flowing river right beside you and multiple waterfalls. This trail also tends to be much less busy than the Arethusa Falls Trail which can be packed. The entire hike is 3.2 miles round trip but it’s very steep in a lot of sections. This makes for a really fun hike if you’re trying to mix it up with more challenging terrain rather than just a simple walk through the woods. If you would like an easier route, you can stay on the Arethusa Falls Trail all the way there. This is supposed to be much less steep, the only downside is you will miss the 2 smaller waterfalls (Coliseum Falls & Bemis Falls).

How to get there:

As you pull onto Arethusa Falls road in Harts Location, NH you will see an overflow parking lot to your right. To get to the closer parking area, continue to the end of the road where there’s parking spots along the sides of the dead end road by the railroad tracks. You will then need to walk across the tracks and take the (blue) Arethusa Falls trail to the left. A short ways down this path the trail will split, to the left is the start of the (yellow) Bemis Brook trail which is the trail that will take you by the 2 extra waterfalls before hitting the beautiful Arethusa falls. If you’re looking for an easier route you can continue straight at the intersection to the (blue) Arethusa Falls trail. I’ve never done this version of the hike but it’s supposed to be easier. The downside is, you miss the 1st two waterfalls before Arethusa Falls.

Artists Bluff Trail

Profile Rd, Franconia, NH 03580

Our rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* We really enjoyed this hike! The steepness made it a fun challenge and the view at the top definitely makes the hike worth it! This is one of the best views you can get of Franconia Notch.

About the place:

The Artists Bluff Trail is absolutely beautiful, especially in the fall! Because of it’s breathtaking views, this is one of the most popular trails in the area. There are two different trails that can be taken, the Artist Bluff Trail (1 mile round trip) or the 1.5 mile hike via the Loop Trail. Both of these are short hikes but due to their length they’re fairly steep trails. This trail is open year round but I can imagine it’s a difficult hike in the winter. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re leashed.

How to get there:

Artists Bluff Trail is located off of Profile Road in Franconia. The trail entrance is located just across the street from the Echo Lake parking lot. You can either park in the Echo Lake parking lot, along the side of the road (depending on time of year) or there is a parking lot just down the road that’s considered the Artists Bluff parking lot. If you enter the trail via the entrance across from Echo Lake, you have the option of the Loop Trail which is 1.5 miles long or the Artists Bluff Trail (stay right at split) which is a 1 mile round trip hike. Both of these trails use red trail markings and are fairly steep. If you use the trail entrance that’s in the Artist Bluff parking lot, this will only give you the option of taking the Loop Trail up to the Bluff. If you’d like to do both, you can always take the Bluff Trail on the way down and walk down the street to the parking lot.

The Basin

Lincoln, NH 03251

Our rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* This is an iconic stop in the White Mountains, and for good reason! The views here are extremely beautiful and if you’re a waterfall lover like me, this is definitely your kind of place.

About the place:

The Basin is a 30ft wide bowl with a waterfall flowing into it that’s located no more than 5 minutes from the parking lot. There are a few other waterfalls along this short trail, but if you’d like to see even more, you can continue on to hike the 2.6 mile roundtrip Basin Cascade Trail. Due to the fast moving water you can’t swim in the basin or near the waterfalls but if you continue up stream there’s a perfect place to swim.

How to get there:

The Basin is located just as you enter Franconia Notch State Park in Lincoln, New Hampshire. You will see the signs for it as you drive North along Route 93.

Cannon Mountain Ariel Tramway

260 Tramway Dr, Franconia, NH 03580

Our rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* The Cannon Mountain Ariel Tramway gives you one of the best views over Franconia Notch that you can get and takes very little effort. I highly recommend this if you’re visiting the area, the view from the summit is breathtaking.

About the place:

The Cannon Mountain Ariel Tramway gives visitors the opportunity to travel up to the 4,080ft summit of Cannon Mountain in only 8 minutes. This popular tram started in 1938 but has since been reconstructed so safety is not a concern. On a clear sunny day you can see mountains by the boarder in Canada! This really is quite the view and so easy to access. At the summit there’s a café and restrooms. You can also take the Short Trail which is a quick and easy 500ft trail found behind the building at the summit that will take you to the Observation Tower to get a 360 degree view of the White Mountains. Although this trail is easy, I highly recommend taking the Ridge Trail which is a slightly longer route and offers incredible views over the Mountains as you make your way to or from the Observation Tower. The Ariel Tramway runs every 15 minutes from 9am-5pm.

Open: May 27th - October 16th Daily 9am - 5pm

Price: Ages 6-12: $23.00 Ages 13+: $28.00

How to get there:

This location is very easy to find, it’s located off of exit 34B on I-93. The parking lot is located on 260 Tramway Drive. To get to the Ariel Tram walk into the main building where the gift shop is and take a right to the ticket booth.

Some of these trails even have waterfalls, ranging from a few feet to 42 feet tall. This area is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

About the place:

The Castle in the Clouds is a beautiful property! You can follow the road up to the “castle” and walk around back to take in the stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee with Ossipee Mountain in the background. There’s plenty to do in this small area. You can take tours through the castle which is known as the Lucknow Mansion, dine in at the Carriage House Restaurant, grab a ice cream or treat at the café, visit the gift shop, or enjoy one of the beautiful hikes. Cathedral Ledge Lookout

579 Cathedral Ledge Rd. Bartlett, NH 03812

Our Rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* This beautiful state park has a look out at the summit that’s very easy to get to and has incredible views of the stunning White Mountains. My favorite part was watching the rock climbers climb these incredible ledges.

About the place:

If you’d like to get to the summit of the beautiful 700 ft ledges, without hiking or rock climbing, you can take the 1 mile auto road that’s closed during the off season. From the top of this auto road you can take any of the many paths to view different angles of the ledges and mountains in the distance. If you’d like to make the hike, there’s a 2.1 mile popular trail to the summit via Bryce Path. Dogs are allowed on all paths as long as leashed. Definitely be careful with kids and dogs near the cliffs, there’s fences along some parts but not all.

How to get there:

The start of the Cathedral Ledge State Park is just along West Side Road in Bartlett, NH. This park is located next to Echo Lake State Park and right down he street from Diana’s baths. To get to the lookout points, follow Cathedral Ledge Road all the way to the summit.

Diana’s Baths

3725 West Side Rd. Bartlett, NH

Carrol County ~ White Mountains

Our Rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* Diana’s bath is such a cool stop & is much bigger than expected! Once you get to the baths just keep traveling up stream for more and more waterfalls!

About the place:

The hike to Diana’s Bath is about a 1/2 mile from the trailhead to the start of the baths but their is so much more to explore here as you go upstream. If you decide to make this venture in the summer be sure to bring your swim suit as this is a popular swimming spot for locals & tourists. This stop offers numerous waterfalls, potholes & natural waterslides which makes for lots of summer fun for all ages & even dogs! It’s also good to note that there is limited parking so it is best to try to get here earlier or later in the day as those are the less busy times. The parking lot is fairly large but it fills up quick since this is such a popular stop! This location also has a wheelchair accessible trail along the side of the baths.

How to get there:

Diana’s Bath is very easy to find! The GPS will actually take you right into the parking lot. Depending on which way you are coming from it will either be on your right or your left along the side of West Side Rd. in Bartlett, NH.

Flume Cascade

Harts Location, NH

Our Rating:

*3 out of 5 stars* This waterfall is stunning, especially in the fall but it isn’t quite as beautiful as the one right next to, the Silver Cascade. But the ease of access makes it very worth visiting!

About the place:

Flume Cascade is a beautiful 300ft drop and couldn’t be easier to see. Depending on traffic you can either view this as you drive by or pull off in one of the two parking lots across the street. There is no hiking needed to see this cascade, just walk across the street after parking and take in the view from the side of the road.

How to get there:

This waterfall is located right on the side of Crawford Notch Road. If you’re going Southbound on Route 302 the parking lot will be on your right-hand side of the road. This is also where you park to view the Silver Cascade.

Our rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* This is an all time favorite of mine in the White Mountains. If you visit this area this is a must see, especially if you love waterfalls!

About the place:

The Flume Gorge is one of the most popular spots in all of the White Mountains due to it’s pure beauty. This trail is open daily from 9 am - 4 pm but is closed during the winter months starting October 23rd. The boardwalks are removed during the winter so that you cannot hike through the entire park but you can take the 2 mile round trip trail that brings you along the side of the gorge, ending at a beautiful 45-foot waterfall called Avalanche Falls. During the on-season, you can take the 2 mile loop through and around the gorge. These trails are fairly steep and have a lot of stairs so it can be a bit of a workout.

How to get there:

The Flume is very easy to find, mostly because you’ll see plenty of signs for it before you even get there. This park is located at 852 Daniel Webster Highway in Lincoln, NH.

About the place:

The Georgiana & Harvard Falls Trail is a fairly difficult 2.7 mile roundtrip hike. This trail leads you along the edge of the Harvard Brook in Lincoln, NH and gives you beautiful views of multiple waterfalls and of the valley below. This is a fairly difficult hike, gaining 728 feet in elevation. There are two main waterfalls along this route, Georgiana Falls (aka Lower Harvard Falls) and Upper Harvard Falls. The hike to Georgiana Falls is 0.8 miles and is a fairly easy gradual hike. From here it’s about another 0.7 miles to the top of the Upper Harvard Falls, but it’s very steep. This trail can be difficult to follow so be sure to look for the red trail markings. It’s also important to note that this is known to be a dangerous trail, please stay clear of the rocks near the water as they can be very slippery.

How to get there:

Carroll County ~ White Mountains

Our Rating:

*5 out of 5 stars* This place is absolutely beautiful! It’s also located right off the side of the highway so it couldn’t be any easier to get to!

About the place:

This 64ft waterfall is one of our favorite finds. It is a fairly busy trail but there are multiple different view points which makes it a little easier for everyone to get the best views. The Glen Ellis Falls Trail is only 0.6 miles round trip. Dogs are welcome as long as leashed.

How to get there:

Glen Ellis Falls is very easy to find, if you use your GPS it will pretty much take you right there. The parking lot for this waterfall is right off Pinkham Notch Road, Route 16. The parking lot is on the opposite side of the road than the falls are on, there is a tunnel underneath the highway that is the start of the trail and will bring you across to the correct side of the highway.

Livermore Falls

Campton, NH

About the place:

This cascading waterfall with rapids flowing through them is part of the Pemigewasset River. This is also the site of an old mill now eroding away that was built in 1786. Unfortunately, the remaining mill is littered with trash and too dangerous to access to clean up but it’s definitely worth a stop. There is little to no hiking involved in this visit, it’s a 0.2 mile round trip walk. You can also see the remains of an old lenticular truss bridge built in 1885 and closed to traffic in 1959. As you can see, there’s a lot of history in this location as well as beauty, it’s definitely a place worth visiting. If you have kids be sure to watch them around the mill & falls, there’s no fencing to keep you from falling. Dogs are allowed if leash but be careful of broken glass.

How to get there:

Livermore Falls is located in Campton, NH off of US-3 South, which is also where the eroding mill is. There’s a small pull off about 2.1 miles on the left hand side of the road if you’re coming from exit 27 off of I-93. Once you park, follow the small path down the hill to the railroad tracks. Walk across the tracks and follow the path down the hill to the viewing area. If you would like to go to the river a little further down the road, the trail for this is located on Livermore Falls Road. It’s important to note that you can’t get to the waterfall or mill from there but it is very peaceful and a great place to relax.

Our Rating:

*3 out of 5 stars* Every time we head up to the White Mountains we are always sure to stop at this beautiful site along our way. We love it because it’s rarely busy and quite the view. We enjoy rock hunting here at the beach further down the river and taking in the site of the eroding mill and cascading falls.

Pack Monadnock Mountain

13 Miller Park Rd, Peterborough, NH 03458

Our rating:

*4 out of 5 stars* This is a super fun place to hike. I love that it is more of a challenge and forces you to climb vs just a walk through the woods.

About the place:

There are many different ways to get to the summit of Pack Monadnock. We went up via the Wapack Trail which is 1.8 miles to the summit. We decided to tackle this hike in mid-February so it was very icy but nothing you couldn’t walk around! This trail can be fairly busy but we went on a week day & were the only ones there. We decided to descend down the mountain a different route in hope to avoid some of the ice. We hiked down via the summit auto road which is 1.3 miles to the bottom. Dogs are welcome to hike this with you as long as they’re leashed.

How to get there:

Pack Monadnock is fairly easy to find! This is located in Miller State Park. The parking lot for the Wapack Trail is right off of Wilton Road an the trail entrance is in the left corner of the parking lot.

Dogs are welcome as long as they’re leashed.

Tucker Brook Loop

Savage Road, Ridge Trail, Milford, NH

Our rating:

*3 out of 5 stars* We really enjoyed donig this little hike, especially in the winter! It was so beautiful with all of the snow and icicles. Looking forward to checking this one out again during a different seasons!

About the place:

This is an easy 1 mile loop through the Tucker Brook Town Forest in Milford, NH. The trail twists and turns through the woods and brings you by a beautiful 12 foot tall waterfall. The trail is well marked for the first part but as you come along the many other trails it can get a bit confusing. I highly recommend using the All Trails App and following the map on there to ensure you don’t get lost (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-hampshire/tucker-brook-loop). If you start the loop by entering the trail to the left of the parking lot then you will be following the yellow markings, then blue & then white. Dog’s are welcome as long as leashed.
